Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall on the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, is one of the deadliest and most destructive storms in U.S. history. New Orleans, the Mississippi River city near the Gulf of Mexico, is where the storm hit hardest. The 2005 disaster left more than 1,800 dead.
